One of them is a little kid with the ability to 'talk to god' and she creates a little oasis virtual reality with what amounts to AI copies of the people she wishes were her friends. And then people die, and the military takes possession of the VR world to turn it into a war sim in order to make superior fighting AIs that can downloaded into chips in soldiers' heads. Nothing can go wrong! (Everything goes wrong.) And that's before the main antagonist of the first game turns everyone in the VR into obligate cannibal demons. Turns out that all but the original AIs are made from the data (souls) of people who died in the real world. Things go to (all but) literal hell, but a few escape to the real world where things further go to hell! Everybody dies, and then their souls decide to fight god to save the rest of the earth, as one does. Lupa is an AI with the soul of a rebel leader who sacrificed himself to save his people, and the leader of one of the Tribes of soldiers.
